Questions

What do the three stages mean?

Always animal means the usual commercial form comes from animals. Sometimes animal means plant, microbial, synthetic, or animal routes exist. Plant or mineral means the usual food form is not from animals, included so lookalikes are clear.

Why show INS and US names?

E-numbers are mainly an EU pack convention. Codex INS numbers and US common names help when you travel or read imports.

Does a match mean the product used an animal source?

No. The checker only highlights names from our reference. For the middle stage, origin depends on the manufacturer. Ask the brand or look for a clear plant claim.

Where does the data come from?

Each entry cites sources such as EU additive rules, Codex INS, FDA labeling practice, and the Open Food Facts ingredients taxonomy (ODbL). Stand dates are on every entry.
